What actually lives in the gap between where you are and where God is calling you? Most leaders will tell you it's not a lack of vision, gifting, or opportunity. It's the weight of everything running in the background — the pressure of the unknown, the replay of what didn't work, the quiet voice asking if you're good enough. Your next level isn't waiting on a better plan. It's waiting on your renewed mind.

In This Episode You'll Learn:

  • What's really living in the gap between where you are and where God is calling you
  • The difference between processing a hard season and rehearsing failure
  • Why mental weight doesn't stay out of your business, your boardroom, or your home
  • How to use Philippians 4:8 as a daily thought audit
  • Why renewing your mind positions you for your assignment
  • Practical steps to govern what gets access to your planning and decisions

Key Topics:

The Bamboo Season — Bamboo grows underground for 5–9 years before it ever breaks the surface. If you're working hard without visible results yet, you're not failing. You're growing roots.

Processing vs. Rehearsing — Processing a hard season moves you forward. Rehearsing failure conditions your mind to expect less than God promised.

Taking Thoughts Captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) — This isn't just a spiritual concept. It's a practical leadership strategy. Every major decision you make is filtered through what has been running through your mind all week, all month, and all year.

The Philippians 4:8 Filter — Run every thought through this daily audit: Is it true? Is it honorable? Is it excellent? Is it worthy of your mental energy? If it doesn't pass the filter, it doesn't get a seat at your table.

Practical Application — Before You Open Your Phone:

  1. Identify the two or three thoughts that are loudest in your mind
  2. Run each one through the Philippians 4:8 filter
  3. Replace what doesn't pass the test with what God has actually spoken over your life through scripture

When you think about the gap between where you are right now and where God is calling you, what lives in that gap? Now, most people, if they're honest, like yourself, will tell me that it's not a lack of vision, it's not a lack of gifting, it's not even a lack of opportunity. Here's what it is it's the weight of everything running in the background of your mind, the pressure of the unknown, that replay of what didn't work, the quiet voice asking if you're good enough, far enough, or even doing enough. You see, those aren't just feelings, those are thoughts. Now, what happens is they become the ceiling that you live and lead under if you never deal with the pattern. You see, your next level is not waiting on a better plan, it's waiting on your renewed mind. And that's what we're talking about today. Matter of fact, we're going to be talking about behavior breakthroughs. So get ready. Welcome to Build for Confidence, the podcast where kingdom builders rebuild identity, sharpen clarity, and lead with conviction. I am your host, Coach Paul Ibarra, and every week we're cutting through the noise to help you stop second guessing, start deciding, and build with confidence right where God has placed you. So listen, drop a review, drop a comment, hit that like, subscribe, all the things, and let's get started. Again, this month, we're in a series called Breakthrough Behaviors. And the premise is very simple. A lot of the things that keep leaders like yourself, business owners, and kingdom builders stuck aren't external problems. They're internal. It's those thoughts that we carry, those patterns that we haven't named, the weight that we were never meant to take into the next season. So this week, we're starting at the very beginning, before the strategy, before the systems, before anything else, we're going to talk about your thought life. So let's get into the weight that we carry into your business. There's a few things. The pressure of the unknown, the pressure of a new season. This is what I call the nowhere between two somewhere. You know that place. You started your business, you were doing good. You had all the graphics, your branding, your people, your community, all the things. And you know what God has shown you about where you're going, but it's that hard season in between that creates the pressure of the unknown. It's that nowhere. Maybe it's the shoulds. I should be further along. I should have more figured out. I should be past this mindset that I'm in right now. You see, that's the weight we carry every single day. And what about the past mistakes that are still on replay? We're going to be talking about all of those things at the end of this month as well. So before I get ahead of myself, let's talk about the frustration of working hard without visible results yet. We're going to break all of this down because sometimes the bamboo season sucks. Now, let me explain the bamboo season. Now, I'm not a scientist, I don't know exactly how it all works, but I do know this. Bamboo is very invasive. Once that plant sprouts up, it's everywhere. My wife dealt with that out in Texas. That was what we called her nemesis. Every single week she was out there bleaching the plant. She was cutting the roots. She was doing all of the things, but that thing kept sprouting up everywhere. But here's the truth. I believe it's anywhere from five to nine years of bamboo growing underneath the soil, doing the hard work, creating the roots, and then all of a sudden it sprouts up. So a lot of business owners know this reality. Sometimes you're working in the dark for five years, like myself. I'm barely starting to climb out of that season of, man, when is this thing gonna stick? And that's where Built for Confidence podcast came in. So if you're in that season right now where you're like, I know that God has called me to this, then this is the podcast for you. So here's the key distinction. There's a difference between processing a hard season and rehearsing failure. You see, processing moves you forward. Rehearsing conditions your mind to expect less than God promised. And here's where many leaders get stuck. It's not a lack of strategy, it's not a lack of resources. You're stuck because of unchecked mental weight. You know that old school song that keeps playing in your head? Now, some of you listening probably can remember what a walkman is. But today we have podcasts, we have Apple Music, we have Spotify, whatever that is, whether it's a podcast or it's a song. Maybe it's that one piece of music that takes you back to the exact moment of a party, a painful season, or a place of hurt. You know the one. It's the same with the mental weight that we carry. We listen to unchecked thoughts over and over and over again. So what do we do? We just keep pushing forward. But that's not where God wants us to live. He wants you moving forward, but it starts with taking your thoughts captive. 2 Corinthians 10, verse 5 says it this way. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take them captive, every thought to make it obedient to Jesus Christ. Now, if you're a kingdom believer, you have the power to do that. This isn't just a spiritual concept, it's a practical leadership strategy. Every major decision you make is filtered through what has been running through your mind all week, all month, and all year. Because mental weight doesn't stay out of the boardroom. It doesn't stay out of the planning sessions, it doesn't even stay out of your home. It sits right there at the table with you, your family, and your business. No matter what you do, no matter how much beer you drink, no matter how much weed you smoke, no matter how many vacations you may take. That mindset keeps replaying in your head over and over and over. And this is exactly what we're going to break down this month. Thoughts, doubt, FOMO, and mistakes. Now I want us to dive into Philippians 4 and 8. This is your daily audit. So go and read it for yourself. But it talks about are these thoughts true? Are they honorable? Are they excellent? Are they worthy of your mental energy? Here's the thing: you need to run your thought life through the filter of God. If it doesn't pass the filter, it doesn't get a seat at your table. And that's what it means to take your thoughts captive every single day. Start thinking on what is good. Start praying more, start worshiping more, even before your day begins. Your business is still going to be there. Your problems still gonna be there. But spending time with God allows him to become the authority over your life instead of passivity. I've been there, I know what it's like, and it's not a good place to be. So as we head over to point number two, this is where renewing your mind positions you for the assignment. Ephesians 6 talks about standing in the authority that God has given you. And that requires a mind that is clear and anchored, putting on the full armor of God. You see, you can't build with confidence while emotionally anchored to past disappointments. You just can't. Because those disappointments are done. That season is gone. And the breakthrough God has for you in this season likely begins with clearing out what is sitting in the foundation of your mind. So here's something I love to do every few months. I brain dump all the things that God has done in my life that quarter or that season. Like really renew my mind and reminding myself, look at what God has done. All of this surpasses all those crazy thoughts and assumptions that tell me that I'm failing. So here's your practical application. Number one, before opening your phone in the morning, identify the two or three things loudest in your mind. Don't grab your phone, identify the thoughts. Number two, run each one through Philippians 4 and 8. Is it true? Is it noble? Is it excellent? Is it higher than where I'm currently thinking? Is it really what God has shown me? These are gonna help process all of your thoughts. And number three, replace what doesn't pass the test with what God actually has spoken over your life through scripture. In the show notes of this podcast, I'm giving you a free download of my daily mindset checkup. This has helped not only myself, but my clients, those in my ministry, and it has five simple questions every morning, and it's yours absolutely free. Because this isn't about toxic positivity. This isn't about pretending everything is okay. It's about governing what gets access to your planning, your decisions, and your leadership. So today is the foundation of what we're going to be talking about this entire month. So here's what I want to leave you with today. Your next level is not waiting on a strategy, it's not waiting on a better framework, it's not waiting on the right connection or perfect timing in many cases. It's waiting on your renewed mind. One that is clear enough to receive what God is actually trying to build through you. And it's all up to you because the ceiling you've been bumping up against isn't external. It's the accumulated weight of the thoughts that you were never meant to carry. So here's what I want you to do. I want you to name them. I want you to get to know them. I want you to take them captive and step into what's next with a mind that's actually ready to hold it. We're going to keep building on this throughout the month. And next week, we're talking about doubt, the difference between doubt as a moment in the process and doubt as a cycle that controls the process. So don't miss it. All right.
